While wandering around Hornby Island a few weeks back, I spotted this fellow sitting out in a parking lot in Ford’s Cove, taking in the sun and sipping a take-away coffee.  I sauntered over and struck up a conversation with him (his friend joined in after a bit) — he was sitting soaking up the warmth on a beautiful day, pondering what the future held for him. We chatted for awhile about his life on Hornby, his future plans (he had recently been evicted from his home of many years) his time growing up in Portugal and life in general.

When it was time for me to move on, I asked if he would mind if I snapped a photo of him, which he graciously ok’d after warning me that it could result in damage to my camera…

I do love random encounters with people (when they’re agreeable!) and engaging them in conversations about themselves and their spaces—I always come away with a good feeling about sharing a bit of one’s self — it gives me more of an insight into the places I visit from a personal point of view and to recognize other’s points of view.
